Background:The use of otic preparations for the treatment of otitis media is still a controversial topic. We reviewed the otic use of Ciprofloxacin for the treatment of otitis media. Methods and results of this study. Results of this study were compared with those of an open study in which the use of otic preparations for the treatment of acute otitis media was compared with the use of Ciprofloxacin otic. Results of this study were also compared with an open study in which the use of Ciprofloxacin otic was compared with the use of Ciprofloxacin in the treatment of acute otitis media. Safety and efficacy of the otic preparations were studied in a retrospective study in which the use of otic preparations for the treatment of acute otitis media was compared with the use of Ciprofloxacin otic.
Material and Methods:Twenty-three patients with acute otitis media caused by Chlamydia trachomatis were included in the study. The inclusion criteria were: first-degree relatives of children with chlamydia (including the partner, mother, sister, or nephew); first-degree relatives of adults who have a history of chlamydia (including the partner, mother, sister, or nephew); a history of previous use of Ciprofloxacin (including the partner, mother, sister, or nephew); and a history of use of otic preparations for the treatment of acute otitis media.
The study subjects included adult patients, children, and adolescents aged 12 years and older.Patients were excluded if they had a history of ear infections, ear-related diseases, or any other systemic disease.
Exclusion criteria included: any history of otitis media in a patient with known or suspected bacterial or viral infection of the ear, or history of otitis media with other causative bacteria; a history of use of the otic preparations for the treatment of acute otitis media; any history of use of Ciprofloxacin otic in patients with known or suspected viral infections of the ear; any previous history of use of these otic preparations or of other drugs that could cause the otic preparations to be used; the use of any otic preparation for the treatment of acute otitis media; any use of any drug, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that could interact with Ciprofloxacin; any use of other otitis media products or the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, for a period of at least 4 days; a history of systemic infection with Chlamydia trachomatis or other strains of the same species; any history of allergic reactions, skin rash, or other systemic or subcutaneous lesions; or any other condition that could have affected the otic preparations or the treatment of acute otitis media.
Patients and Methods:All patients in the present study were recruited from the dermatology outpatient clinic of the Department of Otology Medicine at Aurobindo Hospital in Auroventura. The study was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Aurobindo Hospital (Ethical approval number: H-24-11-0004).
Patients:All patients who met the following inclusion criteria were included in the study: the diagnosis of chlamydia trachomatis infection, the age of 12 years, or the diagnosis of otitis media caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
Patients with the above inclusion criteria were randomized to receive either Ciprofloxacin otic (Aurobindo) or Ciprofloxacin (Ciplox) for the treatment of acute otitis media, or to receive either Ciprofloxacin otic (Aurobindo) or Ciprofloxacin (Ciplox) for the treatment of acute otitis media. The otic preparation was given twice daily for 2 consecutive days.
The control group consisted of 18 patients with acute otitis media, 10 patients with chlamydia infection and five patients with otitis media caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
Patients were randomized to receive the otic preparation in either Ciprofloxacin (Aurobindo) or Ciprofloxacin (Ciplox) for the treatment of acute otitis media.
